All employees are required to complete quarterly Cybersecurity Awareness training modules, and each is designed to elevate your cybersecurity awareness in 20 minutes or less.

Preventing Discrimination & Harassment (Title IX/EEO)

Administered by the Title IX Office.

Designed to raise awareness about harassment and discrimination by explaining the relevant laws and providing insight on how to help prevent and appropriately respond to misconduct, as defined in the HU Policy Prohibiting Sex and Gender-Based Discrimination, Sexual Misconduct and Retaliation (aka, the Title IX Policy) and Nondiscrimination Policy and Procedures (aka, Equal Employment Opportunity Policy). Offers guidance on maintaining a respectful working and learning environment, including fulfilling your employee reporting obligations. Howard is legally obligated to demonstrate that its healthcare workforce members, including students, are receiving training on Privacy, Security, Safety, and other essential healthcare regulations. This includes faculty, staff, and students in Howard University Health Sciences (HU Hospital, Faculty Practice Plan, Health Sciences Schools & Colleges), as well as staff in departments that support these areas.

FERPA & the HU Student Privacy Rights Policy

Administered by the Office of Audit & Compliance. Assigned by Human Resources as part of New Hire Orientation.

Required for all new hires. Available to all Faculty & Staff in BisonHub (Workday).

This online learning resource was developed specifically for Howard University faculty and staff to educate and support you in the protection and appropriate handling of student education records. After completing this training, you will be able to:

  • Protect the privacy of student education records in compliance with FERPA.
  • Discuss the key provisions of FERPA and the HU Student Privacy Rights Policy.
  • Distinguish between the different types of student records (including directory information and treatment records) and the guidelines for disclosure of each.
  • Recognize when health information is covered under FERPA, as opposed to HIPAA.
  • Utilize this resource as a job aid, going forward (after completion, faculty and staff can easily return to it and skip directly to a specific section for their reference).

All study personnel listed on a research study protocol, regardless of their position, must complete Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Program (CITI) modules related to their research every 3 years.

It is important that the researchers are properly informed in University and federal policies and standards. The Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative Program (CITI) is a leading online training program maintained by the University of Miami. It offers curricula in human, animal, and biohazardous research, export controls, research security, conflicts of interest, laboratory safety, and the responsible conduct of research.

Sexual Assault Prevention & Title IX Compliance Training

For Undergraduate Students

  • Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates â€“ Assigned to all first year students (freshmen) prior to the start of their first semester. Engages undergraduate students in fostering healthy and respectful relationships, preventing misconduct, and preparing them to recognize and respond effectively to sexual assault and harassment if and when it occurs.
  • Sexual Assault Prevention Ongoing: Healthy Relationships â€“ Assigned to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Ongoing training that emphasizes healthy relationship skills, safe strategies for bystander intervention among peers, and survivor empathy and support. Students are assigned to repeat online training every other year.

For Graduate & Professional Students

  • Sexual Assault Prevention for Graduate Students â€“ Assigned to all Howard graduate and professional students. Designed to support healthy interactions with advisors, faculty members, peers, and undergraduate students, and prepare graduate assistants (GAs) and teaching assistants (RAs) to respond appropriately to disclosures from students, per their responsible employee reporting obligations under the Title IX Policy.

Alcohol & Prescription Drug Misuse Prevention

Administered by the Center for Drug Abuse Prevention in the School of Education. 

Courses:

  • AlcoholEdu for College - Assigned to all new first-year undergraduate students
    • Using a story-first approach to engage student learners in meaningful alcohol prevention education, this course centers authentic student-driven narratives to explore key topics such as supporting peers in recovery, understanding the short and long term effects of alcohol and substance use, and the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of abstaining and/or reducing the use of these substances while in college.
  • Prescription Drug Misuse Prevention - Assigned to all new Howard University undergraduate students
    • An evidence-based course designed to empower students with knowledge to make informed decisions about medication. It covers the science of addiction, risks of misuse, proper disposal, and strategies to help others, aiming to reduce drug misuse on campus.
